New season starts in Villach

2017/2018 EBEL season starts on 8 September and the Bears will have their home opener on Sunday, 10 September

Attention all hockey fans – the official calendar and schedule for 2017/18 EBEL season have been released. The Bears will take their first step in the new season in Villach on Friday, 8 September, while their home opener will be on Sunday, 10 September when Hungarian Alba Volan vist the Den.

There will be no changes in the EBEL competition format, which means that the regular season will consist of two phases. In the first one, which lasts until 28 January 2018, each team will play 44 games (22 at home and 22 away) after which they will be split into two groups.

First six teams in the standings after the first phase of the regular season automatically qualify for the playoffs and in the 'Pick Round' they will compete for home ice advantage. The other six teams (ranged 7-12 after the first phase) will play in the 'Qualification Round' for the last two spots in the playoffs.

The second phase of the regular season will last for just over a month – starting 2 February and ending on 4 March 2018, while the playoffs, with a quarterfinal round, will begin on Friday, 9 March 2018. All playoff rounds will be a Best-of-Seven series with 22 April 2018 being the last possible day to crown the new champion.

Two international breaks are calculated into the schedule – November (8-12) and February (12-18), while the one in December will be shortened.
