An even and tough game since the very start, with chances on both sides, but dependable goalies was played in the Ice hall of Dom sportova in the game which saw the Bears returning to home ice to host the second team in the league standings, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.
“We have to agree that both teams played a physically and tactically difficult game today. The teams put up a lot of resistance towards each other and gave the crowd a real hockey spectacle. I’m happy with the way we played, I think we had great chances which we created with our own effort and work on the ice. Sadly, we didn’t get the second point in overtime. Congratulations to Lokomotiv for the points and the good game,” Medvescak head coach Gordie Dwyer shortly commented on the game.
Sticking to the game plan and structure resulted in only a few proper opportunities on both sides through the first two periods although both teams had many opportunities with the man advantage. Match penalties were given first to Patrick Hersley in the first period, later on it was Gilbert Brule that was sent to the locker room in the second, giving both teams 5-on-3 powerplays, but neither managed to convert on them.
“We knew that Lokomotiv would be a tough team to play because they are one of the best teams in the league and they showed it on the ice today. Neither team managed to score a powerplay goal, but unlike us, the guests had more luck in finishing off their opportunities. Both goalies were great today and Taylor contributed a huge part in today’s result,” commented Patrick Bjorkstrand after the game.
A tough and physical game, the first period went slightly in the guests favour,’ saw its first goal 15 minutes before the end, followed by an almost immediate response from the hosts. Jesse Saarinen scored against one of the KHL’s best goalies, Alexei Murygin, for his sixth of the season.
“We scored an important goal in the third and managed to take the game to overtime. I’m very happy with the effort and competitiveness that the boys have shown. We always play well against great teams and today we played against one of the top defensive teams in the league,” Dwyer continued his analysis about details that the Bears lacked to win the game:
“We had to focus on our opportunities and finishing them off because we knew that Lokomotiv wouldn’t give us a lot of space to score a goal. In the first period we didn’t manage to send a lot of pucks towards the net, while we played a lot quicker and better in the second, but the away team’s goalie was on a high level and managed to stop all our shots. We need to work on our powerplay because we didn’t do a good job in that segment today.”
The very end to the game gave us a fast game with chances on both sides, but the goalies gave each team a point. The overtime period saw Medvescak going on the penalty kill, but the special team once again proved up to the task, although the guests did get the extra point a minute later on a redirected puck in front of the net.
