The Bears have strengthened their defence today with Finnish defenceman Hannu Pikkarainen, who will be joining the team in Zagreb tomorrow. His debut in the blue jersey is expected to happen by the weekend, documentation permitting. Pikkarainen will wear the number 49.
''This is a player with great skating ability. He's fresh and hungry for the game, and he's happy that he's been given another chance to play in the KHL. So far Hannu has played at high levels in Finnish and Swedish leagues, and he's going to bring us exactly what we lost with Kyle Klubertanz's injury. He has good oversight of the game, he plays with simplicity, he's strong, and he's going to be of help in powerplays too. In any case his arrival is going to be interesting because the team is in need of a kind of jump'', stated the director of athletics Aaron Fox.
Hannu Pikkarainen was born in 1983 in Helsinki, Finland. He spent his junior fays playing for HIFK's U16, U18, and U20 teams. He started his professional career with HIFK, and debuted in the SM-Liiga in the 2002-03 season. Aside from HIFK, Pikkarainen has also played with Finnish secondary leaguers HCK Salamat, the New York Rangers' AHL affiliates the Hartford Wolf Pack, the ECHL's Charlotte Checkers, Swedish primary leaguers MODO and Skelleftea, and also for the KHL's Dinamo Minsk throughout his career, and TPS.
