Two goals by Brandon McMillan, 35 shots on goal for the Bears and 26 saves by Michael Garnett who made his debut for Medvescak, were not enough to reach new point(s) at Avtomobilist. Vladimir Krikunov’s team took the lead in the second period, added another two in the third, and held on during the visiting’s team final rush, to end a three game losing streak.
“It was a competitive, hard-fought and very close game. I liked our effort as a team, I liked the character we showed especially in the third period to come back. We scored what we thought a first goal of the hockey game, but it was disallowed, and it proved to be big in the hockey game. It was a turning point especially because they came back and scored and got the first goal, that was a momentum swing.
They were able to get the next two goals, but I really liked our team’s resolve and our battle. I thought we came back and challenged for the points tonight. This is not an easy league to win in on the road and tonight we responded to adversary and played hard. I’m happy with my players and with what they showed today,” Gordie Dwyer, Medvescak’s Head Coach commented.
An equal game from the start saw a scoreless first period, although both goalies were tested. Medvescak earned a few penalties in a row, but Bears’ PK was on top of things.
Second period was divided on a half in which the Bears dominated and another one in which they made some mistakes after getting scored on, until they made a big push for Vladimir Sokhastiy’s goal. Goran Bezina scored a disallowed goal prior to the host’s first goal.
Final period started off in favour of Avtomobilist as they took advantage of Lucas Lessio’s penalty, and soon after as they added a third goal on the board, one that would prove to be a game winning goal.
Coach Dwyer’s team gave it all in the final 10 minutes of the game. Pulling Garnett for an extra skater gave a chance to McMillan to score twice on Sokhastiy and bring a lot of drama to the final seconds. Edwin Hedberg’s penalty 10 seconds after the goal made a comeback impossible.
