In their last regular season home game the hosts once more found a way to neutralize Medvescak's offense, but unlike the game in Zagreb, the Bears made mistakes from the start and lacked energy and precision to turn over the deficit they fell into. Kunlun celebrated the Chinese New Year in Beijing with a high 5:0.
A bad start to the game cost Medvescak to go down by one in the first minute and after that a tone of a dominant Chinese army was set for the first period. Nets remained empty until the last five minutes when first Max Warn scored on a power play and two minutes later Alexei Ponikarovsky sent the third puck behind Michael Garnett's back.
“We entered the game too slow, maybe due to all the travels and time zones, but that’s no excuse, we have to be better. It happened to them in the game in Zagreb, but here they had a lot more energy. They were working hard and simply put, the outplayed us,” Thomas Larkin, Medvescak’s defenseman said.
The Bears played a more organized and energetic game in the final two periods, but despite generating offense, they lacked production. On one of the power play’s awarded in the second period Mike Glumac managed to find the net after setting up in the offensive zone, but the goal was waived off because of Ilya Arkalov’s penalty.
A game where every inch of the ice had to be earned and players blocked shots on both sides continued until the very last minutes and Chinese special teams again proved to be more successfully. The fourth goal was scored on a power play and the final one with 2 seconds left on the clock.
“This was a historic trip for us and we were all very excited to be playing in China. Kunlun is a team deep in the run for the playoffs and we knew they would come out strong. They had a great start and got the early lead. They are a hard working team and today they imposed their physical style on us,” Gordie Dwyer, Medvescak’s head coach commented.
