Medveščak lost to Graz in their final prep game, Graz won 2:1.
The Bears finished their prep game cycle in Graz, in a game that the Graz 99ers took 2:1 in Liebenau. But, despite the loss, the Bears were the more dominant team, while 19-year-old Andrej Vasiljević held the net. The young goalie from Zagreb was given another chance to prove himself to coach Mark French in the preseason, and to build confidence after playing an entire game from start to finish for the first time. Despite not bringing the Bears to victory, Vasiljević, who was being cheered on by about 500 of Medveščak's fans in Liebenau's stands, can still be happy about only letting in two shots while Graz's 32-year-old goalie Dany Sabourin who has 59 NHL and 307 (including playoffs) AHL game under his belt only let it one goal less.
''We didn't function as a team, but some individuals were good. Despite this loss I think that we're ready for the start of the KHL, and we showed that in previous games. The start of the season won't be easy because we don't know a lot about the opponents, but we'll learn as we go along'', briefly stated Medveščak's coach Mark French.
Graz grabbed the lead in the first three minutes with a shot from Daniel Woger. Zareb's boys tried to even the score immediately after the first goal, but Sabourin was having a good goalie day. By the end of the first period both sides had a few good opportunities but neither Vasiljević nor Sabourin let a single puck get past them.
At the start of the second period Graz's Daniel Woger put the home team further in the lead. That was Graz's last goal, because Vasiljević, with the help of defence of course, locked his net for the rest of the game. Five minutes after Woger secured 2:0, the Bears brought it down to 2:1. Luke Walker shot a rebound right into Graz's net. Medveščak's players continued to dominate Graz in the final period, and a minute before the end of the game they tried to tie the game with six players on. The score stayed at 2:1, though.
