Martinovic: We had to give it our all for our fans
Medvescak has drawn the curtains on the 2014-15 season with the game against Jokerit. Even though the game didn't affect any outcome, both teams played at full throttle and the fans got to see some great saves from the goalies. Jokerit were the first to score. Thirteen minutes into the games Eetu Poysti scored for 0:1. The Bears didn’t take long to retaliate, and a minute later the scoreboard said 1:1 thanks to Sasa Martinovic who took the shot and Pascal Pelletier who blocked the goalie’s view.
''It would have been nice to win in the last game of the season. I don’t know if we let up in the final period because we were tired or because we were playing against a very strong opponent. It’s hard to bring the season to an end when the games don’t have any competitive meaning'', said Coach Doug Shedden.
The second period was the opposite of the first, Heeter made several great saves to keep the tie, and then Zagreb’s team took the lead as Mark Flood scored in the 25th minute. Just a minute later, the guests had a new surprise – after assisting the first two goals, Pelletier got one in the net himself. In the 34th minute Jokerit made it 3:2 thanks to Petteri Wirtanen, but in the 39th minute Pelletier put the Bears two points in the lead.
Jokerit had a great start to the final period and reached 4:3 with a shot from Tommi Huhtale. Eight minutes before the end Jokerit tied the game, and since the score didn’t change until the end of the 60th minute, the game went into overtime, until in the end Jokerit came out on top in a shootout.
''It was tough, there were few of us playing, and some of us are injured. Our goal today was to say goodbye to the fans and to give it our all. They supported us throughout the entire season and I hope that they are happy without our game against one of the league’s strongest teams. We had a hard season, you can see the quality of all the teams and it was hard to recover from a bad start to the season'', said Martinovic.
After the game all of Medvescak’s players skated out on the ice to say goodbye to the fans and thank them for their support this season, and the stands lit up with a ‘starry night’ and song.
