''Shawn is a big strong physical defenseman who skates extremely well for his size. He will add some very good depth and character to our defense corps and will be competing for a bottom pair role. He is very excited for the opportunity and looks forward to the challenge'', said Medvescak's sports director Aaron Fox.
Shawn Belle was born in 1985 in Edmonton (Alberta, Canada). In 2003 he was the St. Louis Blues' 30th NHL draft pick, and he played his first professional career in 2005-06 in the AHL's Iowa Stars and Houston Aeros. He played for Houston for the following two seasons, and in 2006-07 he made his debut in the NHL with the Minnesota Wild, playing nine games and getting one assist. After Houston he played for the Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Avalanche (NHL), Hamilton Bulldogs, Oklahoma City Barons, Oklahoma City Barons (AHL), Adler Mannheim (DEL), and Färjestad (SHL).
Throughout his professional career Belle has played 20 games in the NHL, 405 games in the AHL (96 points), 105 in DEL (22 points), and 53 in SHL (7 points).
In his junior days Belle played for Canada's U18 and U20 teams at the U18 and U20 World Championship, winning two gold medals (U18, U20), and one silver (U20).
