Willsie, Murley, and Thomas (2) scored in Medveščak's fifth prep game.
The Bears lost in a shootout to the Black Wings in Linz in their fifth prep game. The Black Wings won 5:4.
''It was a good game. The young goalies did a good job. Actually the whole team fought up until the last minutes. It's good that we got to do a shootout because we're going to be in situations like that throughout the season. Now we have a day of rest ahead of us and then practices again and a game in Switzerland'', commenter Medveščak's coach Mark French.
The Bears and the Black Wings put on an exciting, and also levelled game for the fans right up to the last minute. Despite having played against Vitjaz the night before and hitting the road for Linz right after the game, Zagreb's boys managed to keep up with the Black Wings - for whom this was the first prep game - and had a two-point lead in just the first nine minutes. In minute 6 Brian Willsie rattled Linz's net, followed by Matt Murley in minute 9. Then from the tenth minute the hosts began to catch up in points. First Philipp Lukas scored in minute 10, and then Brad Moran evened the score at 2:2 just two minutes before the end of the first period.
''This wasn't an easy situation for us because the night before we had a tough game against Vitjaz. But regardless of that, we didn't wanna give up at any point. We held it down well, and Linz played really well too. We're a bit disappointed about these two losses, but on the other hand, we showed character, especially in this game against Linz, and most importantly we have to continue to build on what we've been working on so far'', said Murley.
The Bears secured the lead again in the second period with a shot from Bill Thomas in minute 28, only to have the scored evened to 3:3 in minute 39 by Linz's Jason Ulmer. Unlike the first two periods, in the last period the Black Wings took the lead for the first time, as Andy Kozek made the score 4:3. However, just two minutes before the end of the game Thomas took advantage of a powerplay and sent the game into overtime. Since the winner wasn't determined in overtime, the game went into a shootout whit Linz's Jason Ulmer taking the winning shot.
Medveščak's net was defended by the team's young goalies; 19-year-old Andrej Vasiljevic and 20-year-old Mitja Koren. Vasilevic was on net for the first half of the game and Koren for the remainder.
''We played well. The players helped me out a lot and made my job easier. I'm happy with how I played, I tended the best I could. Of course, I have to work on a lot of things before the season starts and I hope that I get the opportunity to defend the net in the KHL'', said Mitja Koren.
