Regarding a long season and the enevetebility of injuries in ice hockey, Medvescak's management is doing their best to create a depth big enough so any unexpected event can be weathered. Mikko Kousa, a 27-year old Finn born in Lahti will strengthen defense and become the newest Bear joining Jesse Saarinen and Tuukka Mäntylä in a locker room consisting of eleven nationalities.
„We signed a new defenseman, Mikko Kousa. He will come into town today and start skating with the team when we return. Mikko is a very skilled offensive defenseman. He skates extremely well and likes to join the rush. He is also a very good PP player. He is looking forward to coming in and helping us keep moving in the right direction,“ Medvescak's sport's director Aaron Fox announcing the signing.
They say apple doesn't fall far from the tree. That much is true for Kousa who comes from a family of successful athletes (his father was a football player who competed for the national team) and spent most of his career in Finland. He won Junior Liiga playing for the Pelicans in 2007 and a year after that was voted in the All-Star Team and had most scored goals by a defenseman (15). 2008/09 season was his first serious season in the senior league and two years in he joined HIFK and took the Liiga Championship. He put up 28 points through 69 games for the title.
Next change of scenery takes him on his first (and short) stint in the Kontinental Hockey League with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod, but after 19 games played he finishes the season in Swedish MODO from where he returns to the Liiga and signs with Jokerit. Jokerit joined the KHL last season and Kousa stayed in the Liiga with Lukko where he had one of the best and most productive seasons of his career. He collected 36 points, not an easy feat for a defenseman and played all the way to a Game 7 defeat in the Semifinals.
For the national team he was first called upon in 2006 to join the Junior U18 team. Two years later he participated in the U20 World Championship. Since 2011 he's been a member of the senior national team.
