Old acquaintance in the Den - Medvescak brings goalie Alex Westlund
Medvescak have strengthened their defence with experienced goalie Alex Westlund. The thirty-eight-year-old American will be joining Medvescak on Saturday or Sunday.
''With the change in the KHL's rules that don't allow us to use our backup goalies born in '92 and '93, and with January 15th approaching - the last player transfer day - we've decided to sign a contract with Alex Westlund, who will be our third goalie. Westlund will bring some needed range on the team. He's an excellent team player and has played in various leagues throughout Europe over the past ten years. He knows exactly what his role is going to be here and he's very excited to join Medvescak, and he will practice hard with the boys and be a good teammate. If Brust or Dekanich get injured, Alex will be an adequate replacement for one of them'', said Medvescak's director of athletics, Aaron Fox.
Alex Westlund was born in 1975 in Flemington Village, (New Jersey, USA). After four seasons at Yale University, where he played for their NCAA team, he signed his first professional contract in 1999-00 for the ECHL's Dayton Bombers. Aside from the Bombers, throughout his professional career he has played for the Cincinnati Cyclones, Toledo Storm, Trenton Titans, Charlotte Checkers and Wheeling Nailers, for the AHL's Worcester IceCats, Milwaukee Admirals, and Hartford Wolf Pack, for Russia's Amur Habarovsk, Lokomotiv Yaroslav, Russian secondary leaguers Mehel Chelyabinsk, along with EBEL's Olimpija Ljubljana and the Black Wings Linz (with whom he won the EBEL championship in 2011-12), as well as Slovakian Extraliga's HK SKP Poprad and for German secondary leaguers Heilbronner Falken.
In 2004 he played for the American national team at the World Championship Elite Division, winning bronze.
Young goalie Andrej Vasiljevic (1993), who was the third goalie, is currently exploring options with the club and agents to transfer to a new club where he will have the opportunity to be actively on net and to develop his talent.
