Another new face has joined Medvescak's team this weekend. After defenseman Geoff Kinrade and forward Ville Leino, Swedish goalie Mark Owuya is coming to the Den. Owuya is on a professional try out period from Swedish A League's Lulea, after which the coaching staff will decide whether to offer him a contract for the whole season.
''We're happy that Owuya will be joining our club. He will give us more depth to our roster which we need right now, and if he proves that he can play at the KHL level, we will have the opportunity to keep him until the end of the season. Owuya has played several great seasons in Sweden and the AHL, and we hope that he is coming in top shape. Considering what we would get from his arrival to the club, we believe we've made a good move. Owuya will be joining us this weekend'', said Medvescak's sports director Aaron Fox.
Mark Owuya was born in 1989 in Stockholm (Sweden). He played his junior days in Sweden's Djurgarden. During that time he was a member of the Swedish national junior team, and in '06-07 they won bronze at the World Championship Elite U18, and then silver with the U20 in '08-09. Throughout his professional career he's been on net for his home team Djurgarden (SHL), Lulea (SHL), Swedish B League's Almtuna, Orber, Mora, and Boras HC where he was on loan, as well as the AHL's Toronto Marlies, and the ECHL's Reading Royals and Las Vegas Wranglers.
In the '10-11 season he was named the SHL's best goalie by save percent, 92.7% in the regular season, while in '11-12 he was the ECHL's best goalie (save percent 93%) in the regular season, and won the Kelly Cup in '12-13 with the Royals.
Aside from knowing what he's going in front of the net, Owuya also dabbles in rap music. His stage name is Mark In Da Park, and in 2006 he competed on Swedish Idol and released an album in 2008 titled C-Leberty.
