Third win for nine points and top of the West

Reports 01.09.2015.
Third win for nine points and top of the West

As expected, it was a hard fought game, although not from the very start, for Medvescak and Metallurg Novokuznetsk. Kuznya was hungry and in constant pursuit of any chance they could get throughout the game, which led to a higher confidence within the team and the elevation of their entire game.

Three times they fell behind, and three times they shocked the patrons of Ice hall of Dom sportova. The first goal that tied the game, one that can only be described as a total lack of judgement by Zagreb's powerplay unit, was soon forgotten after a dexterous move by Patrick Bjorkstrand.

To be in the right place at the right time is not a feat  that usually repeats itself in quick succession, but when it does, it always brings a lot of good. Just like it did to Zagreb's Dane. Almost a copy-paste move in two attacks his line created brought him his first KHL two-goal game. Colby Genoway and Stefano Giliati set him up the first time, but it took a bit more heavy lifting for the other one.

Geoff Kinrade made a good play on the boards to keep the puck and passed it to Giliati who tried shooting, but Andrei Kareyev was ready, deflecting the puck right on the stick of Genoway who once again finds Bjorkstrand coming to the net.

"I'm happy for my two goals, of course, but my linemates created chances I couldn't pass over. It was a team win for us, and it's easy to score goals when everyone's playing really well and creating chances,“said the two-time goalscorer for Medvescak.

Head coach Gordie Dwyer was more than happy with what Bjorkstrand showed while key players Jesse Saarinen and Gilbert Brule were out of the line-up:

"We left out some key players today and it was a chance for others to show what they can do, to step up and earn their time on the ice. I like what Bjorkstrand showed tonight. He's a skilled player, not afraid to take the shots and he's got a confidence about him. He won't miss an opportunity.“

It was almost the end of the second period when the next puck found the back of the net. The Bears had a big powerplay opportunity at the very beginning, but Metallurg's penalty kill shot them out and took the momentum forward.

Victor Drugov read the miscommunication in Medvescak's team, took advantage of a minor lack of focus and skated with the puck out of his own zone all the way to Cal Heeter who remains helpless for the second time in the night.

When the game evened out in the third period, and teams were exchanging shot for shot, 23 year old Russian Artyom Pugolovkin, in his first official game for the Bears, gave another boost to the crowd with his first goal of the season and his first goal in the KHL.

But the story doesn't end there. Maxim Kazimov, with his second goal of the game, brings back the stalemate for the third time and gives new hope to a team that still doesn't have a win this season.

The overtime didn't vary much from the last period and after an uneventful five minutes, Genoway, who had two assists in the game, steals the show.

In the shootout, as the fifth shooter for the Bears, Genoway pulled a masterful move and brought two new point for the team. With this third shootout win against Novokuznetsk at the Ice hall in Zagreb, the Bears entered the very top of the West.
