The Bears have spent the last ten days at training camp in Czech Republic, where they have been getting in shape for the 2014-15 KHL season. They played their first preseason games there against Slavia (5:0), Karlov Vary (3:2), and Sparta (3:2 OT), and have shown that they are getting better from game to game.
"We're still working on the special teams (powerplay and penalty kill) and on our 5-on-5 game as we are evaluating different players in different situations every day. In the first three games we have shown flashes in all elements of the game, but we still have a lot of work to do since we're only in the beginning phase", said coach Chuck Weber, adding:
''I have been pleased with the professionalism they have showed in their preparation every day. We are picking up different aspects of our systems and what the expectations are for our team and individual performance every time we step on the ice.''
This weekend the Bears have two new challengers ahead of them at the tournament in Straubing. They leave Czech Republic's Plzen from Germany on Friday after their morning skate, then at 6PM they will test their strength against home team Straubing Tigers. On Sunday they hit the ice either against KAC or the Panthers from Augsburg (challenger depending on Friday game outcomes).
''The players are working hard at practice and in their off-ice work outs, so this weekend we expect to keep getting better. On Friday it will be an exciting environment to play against the tournament hosts. It will be a tough game but another great way to evaluate the team and individual players."
