Board of Directors of the Kontinental Hockey League announced today the official list of clubs participating in the 2017/2018 KHL season. Expectedly, Zagreb's Medvescak did not make the list thus ending their competition in this prestigious international championship.
“We are very proud of the past four years and the opportunity to play in the KHL, second to none for us and any other ice hockey club outside of North America. In Zagreb we had the honour of watching some of hockey's biggest and brightest stars and moments like that will forever be etched in club's history. Oftentimes we came out victorious against the biggest and best clubs of the world”, Medvescak's Director of Communications, Ranko Vucinic said and added:
“As our main Russian partner did not extend the contract which ran out after 3+1 years, we did not have a main sponsor to continue competing in the KHL Championship and therefore we did not submit the required documentation for next season within the official deadline. Without foreign, international sponsors, considering the demanding budget necessary to compete in the KHL Championship, we could not find a way to go on with this amazing sports adventure. With today's statement of the Board of Directors of the KHL this information becomes final.”
On Medvescak's future plans Vucinic said: “Medvescak will compete in Central European Championship EBEL next season, as we had officially announced in March. We're preparing for the season and further information will be available soon. Medvescak is delighted by the new sports and organizational challenges brought by the EBEL.”
KHL Medvescak thanks all clubs – members of the KHL Championship for friendship and cooperation and wishes them success in further competition and future work.
